Veterans

SER-Jobs for Progress of the Texas Gulf Coast, Inc., (SER) was founded in 1965 as a partnership between the American GI Forum, the League of United Latin American Citizens, and the U. S. Department of the Navy. For almost 50 years, SER has been committed to helping Gulf Coast Veterans make a successful transition from military service to the civilian work force.

“America’s veterans are a unique national resource with skill sets and intangible traits that make them a special asset in our workforce.” -Frederico Juarbe, Jr., Assistant Secretary of Labor, Veterans Employment and Training Service

Employment and Training Services

SER offers a wide array of employment and training services to Veterans to help make the transition to the civilian workforce. SER is able to bring to bear an extensive knowledge of the Houston area labor market, significant relationships with a large number of Vet-friendly employers and expansive partnerships with hundreds of social service and education organizations dedicated to serving Veterans.

SER Employment and Training services for Veterans consist of the following:

Assessment – A Career Coach will conduct an in-depth career assessment that addresses personal ambitions, vocational and educational skills, aptitudes, strengths and weaknesses, career and educational history, family environment, housing and transportation assets, medical status and supportive service needs.

Employment Planning – Complementing the findings from the Assessment, the Career Coach will work with the Veteran to develop an individualized Employment/Education Plan that serves as the “roadmap” for transition into civilian employment.

Job Readiness – SER has developed a proprietary, industry-tested, Job Readiness workshop that covers 41 separate modules over 40 hours, from Employability Skills to Effective Interviewing.

Job Training – SER offers multi-tiered vocational training courses, where Veterans receive hands-on experience from Master Instructors leading to industry-recognized credentials in high-growth sectors. Refer to Workforce Training under the Program Services tab for a comprehensive listing of training opportunities and the Calendar tab for upcoming training dates.

Employment Services – A Career Coach works closely with each Veteran to match to jobs through the SER Job Bank, Work In Texas (WIT) - the state-wide job matching system, internet job boards, direct referrals to business partners, job fairs and hiring events.
