What is the This Way Ahead program all about?
This Way Ahead is a collaborative effort between SER Jobs for Progress and Gap, Inc. to help youth and young adults to gain job readiness skills and experience the power of work. During the first phase of the program, participants will attend an 8-week job readiness training workshop series in which participants will engage in career exploration and gain the skills and confidence to get a job and keep a job. Upon completion of the job readiness workshop series, participants will be considered for placement as an intern in Gap Inc. stores as well as other summer internship opportunities.
Who should apply for This Way Ahead?
Individuals, ages 16-24, who can benefit from and commit to completing one 90-minute job readiness workshop per week over an 8-week period AND can also benefit from and can commit to a summer internship are encouraged to apply no later than April 12th.
What is the time commitment associated with This Way Ahead?

How do I apply for This Way Ahead?
The program application is available on our website at www.serhouston.org/twa starting Wednesday, March 22nd.
Will I have to interview to be accepted into the program?
Yes. If you are selected to move forward with the interview process, you will receive an email regarding your phone interview day which will either on Friday, March 31st or Saturday, April 1st.
When will I know if I was accepted into the program?
After interviews are completed, those chosen to participate in This Way Ahead will receive a call and email regarding your acceptance during the week of April 3rd.
Job Readiness Phase
What will I get out of participating in job readiness?
Participants of the job readiness workshop series will be better able to find a job and keep a job. They will also learn the skills to find a job and keep a job. Those that complete the job readiness workshops as scheduled will receive a $75 stipend.
When and where will the job readiness workshops be held?
For your convenience, participants will be able to choose and commit to a workshop schedule offered in either West Houston, Southwest Houston, or Southeast Houston.
Do I have to attend all of the job readiness workshops?
Yes. Attendance is important to getting the most out of the program and will be a major factor in determining your selection for the internship phase. Ultimately, poor attendance and or tardiness can lead to dismissal from the program.
Can I still participate if I have other after school activities?
The job readiness workshops will be offered during early evening and late afternoon hours. You will have to determine if you are able to commit to one of the available schedules. Poor attendance and or tardiness can lead to dismissal from the program.
Am I guaranteed an internship if I attend all of the job readiness workshops?
No. Interns will be interviewed and selected for Gap, Inc. internships based on several factors which include: job readiness participation and completion, location, interest and commitment to the internship opportunity. Those who successfully complete job readiness but are not chosen for the Gap, Inc. internships will be given priority consideration for other internship opportunities provided by SER Jobs for Progress. Last summer we placed over 500 youth in various opportunities through partnerships and grants from the City of Houston, Bank of America, and Houston-Galveston Area Council.
When do the internships occur?
The internships in Gap, Inc. stores will occur over a 10-week period from June 18-August 26, 2017. Other internship opportunities will vary in length.
Which store location will I be assigned to if I am selected for the internship phase?
Select Gap Inc. (GAP, Old Navy, and Banana Republic) stores will be hosting interns in West Houston (I-10 and Beltway area), Southwest Houston (Hwy 59 and 610 Loop area), and Bay Area (45 South). Several factors including your commute/travel time to work and store brand preference, will be considered in making intern store assignments.
How much will I be paid during internship?
Interns for Gap Inc. stores will be paid $10 per hour for a minimum of 12 hours per week. Previous interns worked more than 12 hours a week at times depending on the needs of each store location.
Will I be able to participate in the internship if I am required to attend summer school or if I have a planned activities, vacations or other commitments?
As with any employment, attendance is important. Selected interns will need to be available to work their assigned schedule every week during the 10-week internship phase from June 18, 2017 through August 26, 2017.
